What to give your lawn in winter?

Lawn care in winter. Procedures and products to use.

Lawngrass is going through a very delicate period in winter . The cold stiffens its fibers and the hours of daylight are very few. Any incorrect intervention during this time can jeopardize the lawn 's recovery with the arrival of spring.

Our goal is therefore to strengthen the plant structure and ensure that the lawn is able to carry out chlorophyll photosynthesis .

How can we do it?

A very important practice not to forget is potassium fertilization. Potassium is an essential element for our lawn because it helps it strengthen its tissues and overcome thermal stress.

The plants will then be better able to withstand the cold in winter and the heat in summer.

The advice , when possible, is to fertilize before the arrival of intense cold weather so that potassium is already present in the soil when the lawn needs it most.

Which fertilizer should I use?

The important thing is to use a professional slow-release fertilizer with a high potassium content and possibly also nitrogen, about 20 units for the former and 15 for the latter, in a dose of 30-50g per m2.

Now our lawn will be stronger and more resistant to the winter cold.

But let's see now how we can help it stimulate photosynthesis!!

Biostimulation

These are natural products that stimulate vegetative activity in low-light conditions and prevent the lawn from thinning out and reducing its root system due to prolonged darkness .

We recommend a couple of biostimulating treatments with natural products (like this one ) to be carried out possibly before a rainy event.

In winter, it's known that it's more difficult to have a green lawn due to the low temperatures, but sometimes you may need one for any reason... so what can you do?

Luckily, there are natural greening products that have an immediate effect and last about 2/3 weeks.

But there's another trick to remedy yellowing...try to consistently remove frost from the lawn using brushes or nets. This method is certainly more laborious and doesn't have an instant effect, but it's still a way to have a green lawn even in winter .

So far, we've seen what we can do for our lawns, but during this delicate time, there are also things we shouldn't do if we want to keep our lawn healthy ... let's look at them together.

Operations to avoid!

  1. WALKING ON THE LAWN: When the grass is frozen, it is best not to walk on it because the tissues no longer have elasticity and the rupture of the cells could cause serious damage.
  2. FERTILIZATION WITH IRON: It is sometimes mistakenly used to have an immediate greening effect but it should not be done in winter.
  3. DON'T MOW THE LAWN: We know that grass needs to breathe , so anything on top of it somehow hinders its breathing. In winter, this is even more of a problem due to the lack of light.
  4. DISPOSE OF SALT: Sometimes our green space is located near walkways, where, in the winter, we scatter de-icing salt to prevent dangerous ice from forming. However, if salt ends up on our lawn, it can cause severe burns.

I hope this article can be helpful to anyone who, like me, has a passion for greenery. See you next time!
